This large poppy came up in my garden. It has red bloom and dark center over 2 ft high.

It looks like that to me also.

Yes, it is definitely Papaver somniferum. You can tell by a combination of glaucous foliage and hairless stems.
Keep going!

BTW, Another common name for Papaver somniferum is Breadseed Poppy. If you want to grow some gorgeous poppies cheaply (and legally), go down to your local grocery and buy some poppy seeds from the spice isle.

Another BTW, don't take a drug test after eating poppy seed muffins. (learned that the hard way) Smiling

Depending upon where you live and where the seeds were harvested the ones you buy at the grocery store may have been pretreated to prevent sprouting. This is because in some jurisdictions they are illegal to grow but not illegal to eat.

Yes, California is one of those places. So I bought Breadseed just to see for myself. You know what? They grew. I bought a container and grew them every year for all the years I was there. What they didn't do was reseed themselves.

Opium poppies or Breadseed poppies (Papaver somniferum) need extremely hot, dry weather to produce any amount of usable opium (and then you have to know how to process it), so probably not a problem, even in sunny California.

When I was a kid (back in the 1950's), the ATF came through Sacramento and pulled all the gorgeous opium poppies from people's yards. I remember the man coming to the door and demanding to inspect the backyard and, yes, he found opium poppies. Everyone had them - they are beautiful plants. But the ATF did not know the difference between a opium poppy and a Mariposa Lily. They destroyed all the lilies along with the poppies! After 70 years, Mariposa Lilies are still considered rare in California.

@DaisyI, thanks for the info- not to eat poppyseed bagel before drug testing.
The poppies are in the backyard so that should be OK; don't want ATF coming to my house.
