Y'all closed the poison thread...
The thread "Roundup Use" in Ask a Question forum
Maybe the original poster lost interest... I was still reading it.

I know very little about these things.... And... I'm not afraid to learn beyond the narrow dictates of someone's question.

Any way the thread can be kept open?

The original poster had asked a question and received many answers, more than expected. She asked that the thread be closed.

You are free to begin a new discussion to continue talking about RoundUp. Thumbs up

@greene @dave
That thread was just getting started.... Had become a community thread...
If the original poster lost interest, she could simply unsubscribe.... And it wouldn't keep telling her about new posts.
Trying to get the thread to continue.... Disconnected from the train of thought.... Never works.

That thread was almost ready to move into a discussion of glyphosphate caused cancer...
And....
Hopefully a real discussion on whether we've been lied to re glyphosphate soil activity....

I know you were trying to help by suggesting that I start my own thread.... But.... That simply missed my point.

The original question was answered pretty thoroughly. The issues you are describing are not really related. Why not start your own new thread?

If the OP of an Ask a Question thread wants to lock a thread, I will lock it.

Threads in other forums may or may not be locked at the request of OP, but in Ask A Question they will.

The original poster specifically asked that the discussion in her thread be focused on the application she was curious about, and she has the right to ask the thread be closed. It sounds like you're looking for a different discussion.

Any kind of "real discussion about how we've been lied to" is going to turn into a minefield of finger-pointing and accusations, which Anna specifically requested that posters avoid. Her request sounded perfectly reasonable to me. You're looking for a different discussion.

I agree that we had drifted from the original question, and I also agree that it's a worthwhile discussion to continue.

Stone, start a thread in "All Things Gardening" with a link to the one in the Ask a Question forum. Thumbs up

I was also following the discussion with interest, and don't have a problem with threads evolving into wherever the discussion leads. It is often a natural progression, and indeed one can unwatch at any point. I agree with Stone that it would be difficult to recapture the discussion in a new thread. I did also note that Anna specifically did not want to be judged by her use of Roundup, and she did get good answers to her specific question. I think the bigger question is: does the original poster somehow 'own' the scope of the discussion? Perhaps a compromise would be to re-open the thread, move it out of the Ask a Question Forum and into a more appropriate forum for further discussion. I would hope this site is not opposed to active, cordial discussions of controversial gardening practices. Roundup certainly fits that to a T and I am genuinely interested in other folks' thoughts and perceptions.

Putting a link to the old thread at the start of a new one is sufficient to indicate it is a continuation of the discussion. I see no reason to move the original thread and unlock it. Anyone who's figured out how to unwatch a thread has probably figured out how to click on a link for the previous chapter, right? Smiling

I would most enthusiastically agree that we should try to talk about controversial practices and be able to share our differences of opinion openly and candidly and respectfully. Thumbs up

I might be wrong about this, but I think the "Ask a Question" forum is treated a little differently than the other discussion forums, in terms of 'ownership' of a thread. (On the other hand, some of the questions stimulate quite lively discussion without the original poster ever coming back to the thread... Hilarious! )
