Hello! I just bought a farmstead in Minnesota that is completely overgrown with trees, flowers and shrubs. I'm wondering if you guys can help me identify a few trees? A lot are dead and need to be chopped down but there are plenty healthy that just need a hair cut. Here is the first....

Welcome Jesk! What a fun project you have. I agree with your idea to remove the obviously dead trees, but then perhaps just limb up and/or thin out the others until you figure out what you have. Same goes for your shrubs and perennials - how interesting will that be to find out what's already in place. Keep posting pics, especially as the trees leaf out, for better ID sleuthing.

Are the leaves opposite? It looks like they may be and I'm wondering about red maple, Acer rubrum:

Greenish young stem points to Manitoba Maple/Boxelder Maple - Acer nigrum.

It would help to cut a branch or two, and take them where you can get clear images of all those plant parts - branches, stems, twigs, buds, bud scars, leaf scars, flowers, leaves....

Welcome! to NGA and Minnesota Smiling
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.
