I saw this beautiful flower today and almost bought it. But in the past I have had trouble with Gerber daisies (I don't know why) so I did not.

Doesn't it look so cool, clean, and calm? I love it.
Keep going!

I don't know why either. They are beautiful but so frost tender that it would have to be treated as an annual at your house. I couldn't even get them to winter over in California.

Southern Africa must have a peculiar climate(s) because these, Lithops, and freesia are all native and all finicky to grow.

This does not look like a Gerbera Daisy, it looks like an Osteospermum.
It resembles this cultivar.

That's what the label said. It could definitely be wrong!

From what I remember that's the kind of foliage it had. It was definitely with other Gerber daisies in pale pink and orange. I will aim to go back later this week and take more pictures.

I've moved this over to the Plant ID forum to get other input.

It also does not resemble any of the other Gerbera blooms.

Thank you. Do they have similar care needs? If it were labeled wrong in the greenhouse and treated as another species, I wonder if it would have done so well. Just curious, as I don't know much about either one.

I had an African Daisy years ago, in a vase, it expands and makes a ball-like shape bush. My soil is not very good, but this flower did great, left it outside the whole year, takes good heat and cold... I had no trouble with it.
It died because spraying for some weeds in the pasture, the wind brought in the poison. That was an accident.
I cannot find another one anywhere.... Sighing!

I have to agree with Sue! I have both, and that sure looks more like Osteospermum to me.

That's why common names cause so much confusion when it comes to plants. I agree that the bloom appears to be that of African Daisy, Osteospermum rather than Gerbera which also have the common name of "African Daisy". You can tell for sure by comparing leaves.

It was not even labeled as a common name. It said "Gerbera jamesonii AKA Margarita africana." I only remember that because I Googled it and just searched my history to make sure.

It is very common for growers to mis label the plants.
Easily done if grown from seed and the person adding labels to the plants for sale is a worker who knows zilch about the plants.

When labels are not somehow firmly attached to the pot or plant sometimes customers pull them out to read and then put them back in the wrong pot also. I've found Osteospermum easier to grow than Gerbera.

In what ways? Just curious as I've only grown Gerbera and it was a long time ago.

I've planted Osteospermum and they flower for a long period and don't normally give any trouble. I've found Gerbera often look good for a while and then stop flowering (outdoors). Sometimes they start to look a bit sickly as well. I haven't persisted with trying to figure it out other than that at times I have suspected tarnished plant bugs were attacking them.

I wonder if the tag saying a/k/a Margarita africana may have been because it is actaully African Daisy (Osteospermum 'Margarita White')

I wondered that too. But I've since seen Gerbera jamesonii referred to as "Margarita African daisy" albeit not in English (the language of this forum). I hope to go back Friday or Saturday and photograph the leaves to be sure.

Thumbs up That will definitely have different types of leaves.
