I bought this plant last year November 2016, but I wanted just a single trunk plant. Can I separate the trunks and if I eventually do, what are the chances that they will survive. I was meant to understand that spring is the best time to handle this fragile plant. Will they survive the surgery?

Dump the whole plant out of the pot. How many stems have their own root system? This will tell you what you can divide or not. IMO, spring has nothing to do with it. Gene

Spring or summer is the best time to do this if you don't live somewhere with a really mild climate or where you can closely control its immediate climatic surroundings. Dump it out of the pot as Gene says, rinse the soil away and see what kind of tangled root mess you have. With F. benjamina, you can be as gentle or as ruthless as you want - lots of times I will start out trying to gently tease apart roots only to eventually just get frustrated and end up just yanking them apart. Stick'em in soil and they'll likely recover, even any trunks that might not have roots should root themselves and grow. If it is warm enough that you can keep them outdoors in a shady area, that will help them out.
