Could Rhamnus purshiana and Frangula purshiana be the same? Both use cascara and cascara sagrada as common names.

According to the Catalogue of Life, Rhamnus purshiana is a synonym for Cascara (Frangula purshiana)

Thanks, I will propose that they be merged.

We don't merge them, we add the synonym name to the entry and then delete it.

Rhamnus purshiana is actually the synonym for Frangula purshiana subsp. purshiana so it's been added.

@Calif_Sue this is confusing to me. What is the difference between a merge and adding info/deleting duplicate entries? Seems one and the same to me. When I find a possible duplication, should I propose a merge, or just start a new thread in this forum, and let the admins sort it out?

For example, here's another one: I posted a photo someone questioned in the ID forum, got a correct ID, and proposed that my photo be moved. While researching web links to compare photos, I also found that we have two entries in the database. One is accurate, the other is a synonym (per CofL). Do I propose that the two be merged, or just let you know of the duplication? FYI, Sibbaldia tridentata is valid name, Sibbaldiopsis tridentata is synonym. Both are in our database.

Thanks.

Zuzu worked with the merge tool a lot and gave me some pointers. She said "the merge tool only moves photos and comments and will only move them to the entry with the lowest ID number. If the one with a higher ID number has plant growing data, you have to add it to the other entry before the merge. You also have to correct the names on the entry with the lowest ID number before the merge because the merge tool won't combine names either."

So often it's easier for admin to manually take care of any photos, details and add to synonym names before deleting that entry. When you find these, it's best to start a thread here in the Plant Database forum and then any admin can take care of it.

I was secretly hoping that was the solution - some things are just flat confusing to me. I will continue to just post a new thread for potential duplicates.

I just fixed the Sibbaldiopsis tridentata and it's 3 additional cultivars to now read Sibbaldia tridentata as the accepted name.
