|We have cats and I decided to grow catnip rather than catmint. I understand that the 2 plants are related BUT cats prefer catnip over catmint.
Recently we visited a diner and our waitress said her boyfriend grew catnip and she brought a small plant in to give to me. Since I have grown catnip before and have bought it commercially (dried and ground up) I know what catnip smells like. The leaves of the plant she gave me do not smell like catnip but have more of a lime aroma. I even tasted it and it did not taste like catnip (good thing it wasn't poison ivy haha). So I am wondering what kind of plant she gave me...catnip or catmint. Maybe only my cats can tell for sure LOL. Any suggestions or comments? She said her boyfriend buys the catnip from a nursery and I went to the same nursery and their shipment did not come in yet but even the owners of the nursery assured me that catnip and catmint are NOT the same plant (I thought that they were). I didn't want to argue with her about the name of the plant because she was so nice as to giving it to me.

|Welcome to NGA, Matthew ( @ftlbrt16 ).
I didn't know this before, but in looking through the plants database here I discovered that there is a "Lemon Catnip" Lemon Catnip (Nepeta cataria 'Citriodora')
Maybe that is what was given to you?
