I bought these two kalanchoes. They had different names on their pots. They are clearly 2 very different plants. But when I put them into the database here, they are both lumped under the Mother of Thousands name. Are these really the same plant????

Kalanchoe #1

Kalanchoe #2

Please help me figure this confusing naming thing out.

I moved this to the Plant ID forum so you can hopefully get the IDs narrowed down.
They are both Kalanchoe but two different species.

I can't tell you for sure which species they are. Waiting for them to bloom would help. "Mother of Thousands" is a common name given to the entire genus because of the propencity to do what yours are doing. Smiling

There's a third one mixed in here, too.

Kalanchoe #3
Thumb of 2017-04-17/LizDTM/17bf34

This had a third name, and when I got it, full of blooms, it looked like a chandelier. But that's not what the name on the tag went back to.

The top 2 look like delagoensis (AKA tubiflora, which helps me remember it's the one with tubular leaves,)
Chandelier Plant (Kalanchoe delagoensis)
& laetivirens.
Mother of Thousands (Kalanchoe laetivirens)
Both make prolific leaf-edge babies.

I'm not sure what the 3rd one is but it does not look like one that would make leaf-edge babies, while leaves are still attached to the mama plant, so it wouldn't be one that shares the nickname, "mother of thousands/millions." Not all Kalanchoes produce those babies, the ones that do have the Bryophyllum synonym.

What are the names on your tags?

#1 does look like what's in the database, so that's not the one I was confused about. LOL But I was confused when I posted that I was confused. Rolling on the floor laughing

I'm really confused about 2 and 3.

#2's tag is kalanchoe crenato - daigremontiana and some of the pictures in the database look like it. But others look like the chandelier kalanchoe (delagoensis). So I'm not sure if the pictures in the database are wrong, or the tag is wrong.

#3's tag is Kalanchoe delagoensis and that looks to be correct.

So maybe I'm not confused. Maybe the photos in the database for daigremontiana are in the wrong place?

But wait, there's more. Now when I scroll down further on the chandelier page, I'm seeing the photos for the #1 Kalanchoe (Tubiflora I think).

So yes, the pictures of these three seem to be very confused between each other in the database. My brain hurts.

Ok, making sure we are looking at the same entries.
Mother of Thousands (Kalanchoe daigremontiana) All the photos look correct to me.

And yes, it looks like the first three images, mine being a couple of them, look like they may be wrong in Chandelier Plant (Kalanchoe manginii) according to other online image. I got the cuttings years ago and that's how they were labeled. Shrug! Need to further investigate.
Kalanchoes can be confusing. nodding

OK, if we take them one at a time, Mother of Thousands (Kalanchoe daigremontiana), there are pictures there that appear to be for the chandelier plant, including the landscape photo at the very bottom. That is definitely what I have as a Kalanchoe delagoensis.

The blooms are very similar, like I said, kalanchoes are tricky to get ID's on, I find so many of the blooms look alike. We need an expert here. nodding

K. daigremontiana is the catch-all name given/used whenever someone doesn't know the ID. Few people actually have this plant, but many people have plants with this incorrectly applied label.

The pics in that entry by Booker & the 2nd pic of Dave's, with the wider leaves, look like laetivirens to me, though cultural variations can cause fading &/or other various variations in appearance. The leaves of this species, in conditions matching normal habitat, are darker on top than on bottom, with mottled variegation on the bottoms of leaves, and a curled lip where leaf body meets petiole.

K. tubiflora & K. delagoensis are synonyms, diff name for the same species. The leaves of this species are round in cross section, and relatively short, about 1.5 inches, a khaki brown color in sufficient light.

Although I was happy to get permission from someone else to share their pic of K. manginii here, it's not a plant I've had or even seen in person.

By no stretch of the imagination am I any kind of plant expert, just a person who has a fascination for & collection of Kalanchoes that I've had fun observing. I have both of the ones pictured in your opening post here.

I just call mine Mother of Thousands. And indeed, those babies at the tips are eager volunteers...watch out, you will soon have a farm of them and can easily over run other containers. I am glad our wet winter tempers them down a bit.

I think I'm just going to put them in as the name that was on their tags, and ignore the pictures that are completely different from what I've got. Thank you all for suffering through this with me.

You are in the best position to compare because you have the plant in question to observe at will. I'm not convinced the 2nd one is tagged correctly, as daigremontiana, but I am at a huge disadvantage trying to gauge from just 1 pic of your cute plant. If you're still hesitant, you could add more pics to this discussion, and as it ages, its' nature should be more readily apparent.
