My first line of defense to an unwanted pest is to first give as much positive attention to the plant being attacked - in your case, lawn. Fertilize with a good quality organic fertilizer specific to your region and be sure it is not over or under watered. Thatch if it is clogged with dead stuff. I then research the life cycle of the pest and read as much as I can about non-toxic approaches to control or eliminate the pest.
