I am in zone 5a. Should my Butterfly Bush be showing new growth or is it too early/cool yet? I am afraid that maybe it did not make it through our winter. It is only a couple years old.

Mine are JUST showing some spring growth so don't give up yet. But if you are impatient (I suffer from this), do a scratch test. Scratch the bark with your finger nail, if its green underneath, be patient, its alive. If its brown or doesn't scratch, its dead.

Mine have often died back down to the ground and come up from the roots so even if your plant flunks the scratch test, give it some time.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost
