Recently purchased macrophylla hydrangea's. Planted them in containers with John Innes No 3 but now the leaves are changing colour

Since you used John Innes I assume you are in the UK? The purpling is most likely phosphorous deficiency, which could mean either a shortage in the pots or something like cold weather interfering with uptake. Have you fertilized with anything yet? If so, did it have phosphorous (the middle number in the analysis?). They get to be big plants, is there any way you can plant them in the ground instead of in pots?
