Plant ID forum: Black ball seeds

What are these black ball seeds? They appear split into two smaller brown seeds. In the photo you can see a couple are beginning to sprout.

Can you give us an idea of the city or state, or what part of the world these seeds were found? Also, if you can upload photos of the leaves and bark of the tree that they were found beneath, it would help narrow down the possible identification.
