Both these daylilies were hybridized in Florida and registered as evergreens.

I am in zone 4 in the North. Both of the daylilies are deciduous in the fall and dormant during winter here.

If you grow either one of these daylilies could you please post whether the daylily is dormant or evergreen for you and your location. I am trying to learn if their growth pattern switches from evergreen to "deciduous and dormant" in a specific location.

Hi Maurice,
I've grown Pandora's Box in zone 8a (Stone Mountain, GA), for three years and it is evergreen for me....always has been. It has increased from two small fans to a full blown clump of at least 15 fans.

Can I add a question Smiling Where evergreen, do they try to grow during mild spells?

We've had a couple of very mild winters, but mine does not grow during the mild spells.

I'm always confused by evergreen, sev, and dormant. Here in 7a everything dies back in winter but I notice the evergreens "green up" earlier in spring. I have Pandora's box but I have no idea how to answer this question. Confused

Chorus Line has always done well for me, it is short good for the front of the garden or along a path.

@Pat236 - If you have had a cold snap that was cold enough to kill the leaves of 'Pandora's Box' during the winter, what happened when the mild weather returned? Did new leaves grow?

@Jillz Does your plant of 'Pandora's Box' have all its leaves die completely back during winter? It has no green leaves above the soil.

My plant of Pandora's Box comes out from under the snow with green leaves showing. They are only an inch or two high, but they are green, as are many of the SEV's and EV's.

Valerie, do you mean they grow under the snow so that when it melts the shoots are already there, or do you think they don't die right back to the ground at any time during winter?

I don't think I will ever truly know what they look like in mid February with 3 feet of snow over them, but many of my daylilies are green shoots as the snow melts around them in spring. Others are completely invisible for a week or two after the snow disappears. My inclination would be to say that some retain a small bit of green even in winter under the snow.

@touchofsky Valerie, would you say it looks like this, with short outer leaves?

Not as fresh looking, I would say the green is left from the previous fall.

Thanks, Valerie, If the green was left from the previous fall there should be dead leaf attached to the green. I guess you may have cleaned that up by now, or might you remember if it was there? The picture is actually of my 'Pandora's Box' taken a few days ago.

It may be that you get more, and earlier, snow than I do and that helps some stay greener than where I am.

I have Pandora's Box but it is planted where I never see it so I wouldn't be able to chime in on here about what it looks like during the winter. Sorry that I cannot be any help. That part of my garden doesn't get the attention that other parts get. Shrug!

Cindy, what it looks like now would help if it isn't too far emerged. In other words do the fans have short outer leaves that don't have dead leaf from last year still attached? Maybe you've been having better weather than I have here, cold and rain, rain rain with more expected on Friday so your daylilies are further ahead and too hard to tell. I even saw the S word for Sunday night Crying

We have had rain for the last 3 days. This morning the sun is shining so I could go take a picture of it. Tomorrow is back to rain again.

Here is a seedling (Critic's Choice x Ed Brown) x Prickled Petals . Two of these are evergreen. This seedling was green as soon as the snow melted.

Thank you, Valerie. Yours seems to have behaved differently from mine.
