At our local swap I picked up a dried root of some kind and planted it.

The leaves have raised red veins:

You can see part of the old root here:

The plant is growing happily in a pot for now but I need help to get the identification so I can know where to plant it in-ground where it will thrive.

Thank you Thank You!

Maybe some kind of Hibiscus?

I agree a hibiscus of some sort. If not a hibiscus species, then a close relative.

I need to know where to plant this in the yard. Will it need protection during the cold months? or can it survive on it's own if planted in-ground? Thank you. Thank You!

I'm leaning towards Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus).

The leaves make me think it may be something else. H. syriacus leaves that I've seen have lobes, and deeper serrations on the edges, for however strong of a clue that is.
