Hi everybody, this poor thing, is there anything I can do for it to bring it back, or should I just have it dug out and put to rest?

I'd be inclined to put it out of its misery. It may be difficult to dig it out by hand, it looks like it was bigger and the top met with some fate. If so, I suspect if you cut it off as near to soil level as you can get it would not grow back and then you can disguise the stump with something else.

I agree. I would remove it and plant something different.
But, oh my gosh, do not plant another maple tree. Looks like you already have tons of those. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Greene, you ain't seen NOTHIN' yet -- the mountain is being very indulgent in letting my house stand in this spot, but that's where it draws the line! Big Grin

Thank you both, I'm going to try and saw it right down to the bottom, and then put another container on top and put something in there. I left two containers back in the old place with geraniums for "curb appeal," I could kick myself now!

Reno used to be the divorce capital of the country, women used to go out there and stay to establish some sort of residency, and then it would go through without a hassle or a judge's moralizing lecture -- I do use archaic references, sorry!! But don't you ever watch Turner Classic Movies?? Rolling on the floor laughing

Oh, got it. Its also got a reputation for quicky marriages. I always thought that was funny because its easier to get married in CA - there you don't need a license to get married, you just register the marriage after the fact. In Nevada, you need a marriage license.

We got married in CA and then registered the marriage. I've been married to the same (slightly nutty) guy for 40 years. Lovey dubby

Carol, you should have done it the other way around.

@sooby Hey Sue, I don't think anything you recommended is going to be a problem, check this out:

Thumb of 2017-05-08/Garden10/7dfd4d

Don't have to worry about really hurting yourself to dig something like this out when it was planted by a jerk in "amended" soil who was going for "curb appeal." I've replaced it with a vanilla strawberry hydrangea, but I have all those maple seedling to deal with, thank God @greene has volunteered to road trip up here and do it for me Rolling on the floor laughing

I'm hoping it is safe to go back outside now; my window of yardwork is closing, and the guy next door has mowed his lawn four times over in the same places waiting for me to come close so he can grab me and start bashing all the neighbors for my edification Grumbling
