I was just reading another thread and phosphorus and nitrogen was mentioned. Is ammonia something I should be using in my watering?

The short answer is no. You're better to use a fertilizer formulated for plants and which would show the major ingredients as three numbers, the first is for nitrogen, the second for phosphorous and the third for potassium, e.g. 24-4-8.
