Hi everyone. This morning, I went out to proudly gaze at the little new peony pips that are turning into leaves and sadly, I found one lying on the ground, totally detached. If it were a seedling, I would immediately think cutworm, but it is not. It's from a bare root that I planted last fall, and one of several (forgive me, I'm new to this and don't know the names) little leaves that unfurled from the soil as opposed to showing itself as a pip and then developing leaves.

Even lying there on the ground, it isn't dehydrated or unhealthy looking.

Could this be a cutworm? Or would it be something else? Confused All advice is welcome. Confused

So sorry, Joanna. I've never had a cutworm issue so can't speak to that but I HAVE had tiny stems chewed off and left by bunnies and/or squirrels, also have had the turkeys damage them while digging in the mulch for insects. You might want to make little enclosures out of chicken wire and bamboo, just out a foot or so around each plant just to protect them from any gnawing animals. Added bonus is that if you leave it at just 18-24" it would serve as a prop for any droopers you might have.

Joanna, in my experience it is baby bunnies that do that. I lost a stem this year to them. They bite everything to see if it is edible. D'Oh! Then they leave it if it isn't. I use chicken wire. I get the green coated rolls.
