I have one of those big holly trees on the east side of my house and I'd like to plant hostas under it. Does this type of tree tolerate mind to have its roots disturbed just a little, or is it more touchy than that? I do not want to harm the tree long-term. But grass doesn't grow there and my dh does not want to mow under it (branched too low) and I thought hostas would look nice. Good idea? or bad?

I'd say go for it. If you don't want to disturb the roots much, plant smaller hostas (quart sized ones would be good) instead of gallon ones or raise the bed slightly so you don't have to dig as deep and just edge the bed to hold the extra dirt in.

You also might consider Epimedium pinnatum var colchicum. I have found it to be a tough survivor in dry shade. Slowly spreads into a groundcover. But if you combine it with the hosta, plant hostas that will get pretty big as the Epimedium is maybe 16" tall. I planted some things under a holly at my prior place, it worked out fine.
