Hi guys n gals,

I was hoping to get a plant ID on an herb that has flowers that look exactly like Iris flowers more or less. Unfortunately, it is a black and white drawing, but I feel the herb on the tip of my tongue I just can't get it out.
Here is the picture attached.
Any herbs you may think please post I really need help identifying this one and it is definitely not an Iris.
Best wishes to everyone,

Mateo.

Hi @MateoG315
Please can you explain why you think the mystery herb is not an iris? How does it differ from an iris?

Thank you so much guys. It is Orris Root! I am hand painting an old herbal almanac that has a lot of illustrations without names.

Orris Root can be either Iris x germanica or Iris pallida.

Good to know!
The Germanic variety is more dark purplish/blue; while the Iris pallida is more of a lighter blue.
Has anyone grown these in the US before to success.
I live in the Texas hill country and I use Orris Root a lot in my herbal blends, I am just not so sure how it will take?
I wonder which would do better?
Thank you so much guys n galls! Thumbs up

I grow both I. germanica and I. pallida here in UT. They both do very well in the high heat of summer and cold of winter. Both increase quite well.

I grow I. pallida and it does quite well here, too. It is my absolute favorite Iris.
