On Thursday, my computer got hit by a virus. It took my computer down so that it would not start up my Operating System. (I have Windows 7, which I love!) I had this happen years ago using XP. Sadly though, I became complacent and felt safe. (BIG MISTAKE!!!!)

I had to rebuild my computer using the factory settings which meant I had to reload all those programs that had been added since. I lost all my photos, documents, website links, you name it! What a mess!!! D'Oh! D'Oh! D'Oh! D'Oh!

Luckily, I had made a backup of my files (photos, documents, etc.) last month, but not a system back-up because it takes over a day to do a complete system back-up. My last back-up was done on April 14, 2017, so I lost documents and many photos taken after April 14.

I like to hybridize, so it is very important for me to track my seedling information and keep photos. The good news is that I was able to download many of those missing seedling bloom photos with my photos from this website because I had posted them in a thread in April. But work and family have kept me very busy since and I failed to post the newest bloom photos including data photos for the end of April and the beginning of May. So those photos and information are lost. It could have been MUCH worse though if I had lost everything. Thank goodness I did the mid-April back-up. I had not done a back-up since October 2016 before that. *Blush*

So .....

This is a warning to everyone to ALWAYS do a backup of your important documents and photos to an external hard drive, the cloud (online backup), or copy them to a CD (outdated option I know, but it still works for those with older computers). I should have been doing it weekly, but I often didn't make the time. Now I will be sure to do it more regularly.

So heed my warning! Back-up those photos everyone!!!! Thumbs up The hackers are out there and your system may be much more vulnerable that you realize! Sticking tongue out

Hi Becky,
Sorry to hear about your losses. I keep all my camera memory cards, and when they are full, I buy a new one. Also, I save important info on a USB stick, and print out on paper many things.

Good reminders to be careful Thank You!

My computer got hit by lightening through my cable/internet line going into the modem that was hooked up to the computer. The computer was not repairable but I was able to have someone transfer all my data off the hard-drive. I have not did a back up for a long time either.

Neither have I. I do have an external hard drive and all I have to do is plug it in and transfer the latest photos from the computer. I had better do that.

So sorry for the loss of your files and all the hassles and time to get it back to working order, Becky! Can I ask how did your computer get the virus? Was it from an email or a popup or something else? Please let us know so we can be prepared should we come across something like it. Thanks.

My daughter just got some weird virus and it cost her $300 to get it off. The tech said this virus is in at least 70 countries now.

I know a lot of people don't like hearing this...but the reality is that using outdated Windows platforms and not keeping anti-virus subscription services up to date are the biggest reason for this. That virus spread so fast because so many people are still using Windows XP, which is no longer supported by Microsoft (It should be noted that Microsoft DID release an update for Windows XP in response to this new threat).

Windows 7 is still supported...but only till 2020 if I remember correctly.

Sometimes you got to bite the bullet and upgrade. And make sure any updates to your operating systems get downloaded/installed.

Thanks to everyone for your words of support and encouragement.

I am still recovering lost programs and data. Quite the headache.

I do not know at all how I contracted the virus. I truly don't know. Over the years, I have seen many suspicious things on both the internet and coming into my email box. But I try to be quick to delete or log off anything that appears suspect. Hackers are out there and they are getting smarter and more cunning.

I had virus protection which was updated regularly. But even that got hacked. I noticed that it appeared it was not doing the scans properly. And then my system went down shortly after that.

Would love to know what is considered the BEST virus protection program. I've used many including avast and McAfee. What do you use????

Becky, I did update to Windows 10 and the Geek Squad recommended Webroot. I've been pretty pleased with that. That said, we do keep a remote hard drive attached and are going to update that with a solid state remote hd. It's a rough world out there!!

I back up everyone of my daylily pictures to a free cloud service called Flickr.
The amount of free space that they give you "1 terabyte" is so large it would be almost impossible to use it all up.
There are possibly other sources that I'm unaware of.

I also bought several of those thumb drives to store all my photographs and file information
Like Becky said, a good back up is prevention of complete disaster

Good reminder! I've gotten a little lax on remembering to put all back ups on the hard drives. Have now copied all recent pics and files to HD . My laptop is getting old - I hate to take that step, but it will soon be time. Have already been checking a little bit on new ones.

Sounds like you are on top of your back ups, Becky. I am afraid I am not as fastidious as that. I back mine up on an external hard drive every six months or so. REALLY need to do it more often than that. Thanks for the reminder Smiling

I am in complete agreement with Robertduval14, and I love all your movies!!!! LOL.
You have to upgrade to Windows 10, it may well be a free download. Go to Microsoft.com to see. You don't need a virus protector other than Windows Defender included with Windows 10. Updated against the latest viruses almost daily.

PS. Do not talk to anyone on the telephone who says in a strange accent, and I am being very politically correct: " I am calling from "Windows" to tell you that we notice some strange transactions on your computer." In a jiffy, they will get your password and your credit card number!!!! USE CAUTION!!! I like to give a very loud expletive before I hang up!! LOL.

Upgraded last year to a windows 10 pc. Don't open anything that look suspicious. Be wary of strange looking email with family names attached in the title/subject.
