When planting along a chain linked fence, do you have to put something along fence (between plant and fence)?

Depends on what you are planting, what is on the other side of the fence, and how friendly you are with the people on the other side of the fence. A photo of the area might be helpful.

I would use either a length of pressure treated/ground contact wood or a lenght of plastic landscape edging to make life easier. Other options would be bricks or concrete blocks to form a barrier.
