Welcome! What zone are you in Texas? I'm surprised they grew for you in NY. They can't go below 20 degrees. Here is our database for it.

Welcome!

I don't think that you can grow lilacs in Texas. We (ok, not 'we' - it was my mom) grew them when I was a child and we lived in Illinois. Every year I'd take some to my teachers.

If you're aiming for the lovely color and the sweet smell, you might try wisteria. It's not a bush, tho. And although I love it, some people think it's too aggressive.

Another possibility is to try a Mountain Laurel tree.
The blooms have the same color and the smell is reminiscent of grape cool-aid.
See Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora)

Both of these do well in central Texas, depending on what you mean by central Texas.

Oh, my. I just looked at the link for the lilac bushes. Those are not at all like the ones we had in Illinois. Nevertheless, I'm still skeptical about growing them in the heat of central Texas.
