There is a shrub growing in my aunt's garden right next to an azalea, and she's calling it a weed. We just added a pagoda dogwood to the yard, and I think the leaves of this 'weed' look similar to that of the dogwood - a pair of leaves out of the same stem, with veins that run parallel to the leaf's edge (see photo). It's in an area that has shallow depth and will grow like a shrub rather than a tree. Is it a 'weed' or a long dormant dogwood?

Thanks!

The leaf does look a lot like rough leaf dogwood to me.
