I don't have any input on the cultivar/species thing, but Pentas is not an annual, just only hardy from Z10+. If one part of the sign is wrong, it pulls the rest into suspicion, in my mind.

I think it is labeled annual because it is an annual here, the test garden is also used to show possible plantings here in Indiana

Hi Cinda,

Those two photos were actually listed under the cultivar Starclusterโ„ข Lavender and not 'Pinata Lavender'. You can see the thread that I started, here.
The thread "Not Starclusterโ„ข Lavender" in Photo of Pentas lanceolata 'Pinata Lavender'

The Pinata series seems to be missing from our database. It is a new, vegetative series by Dรผmmen Orange/Red Fox.

@Calif_Sue
Can you add these four to the database and send Cinda's pics to the 'Pinata Lavender' entry, please?

See page 94 of this catalog.
https://issuu.com/dummenorange...

These trial pics look consistent with Cinda's pics.

Thanks much! Smiling

And as Danita mentioned the two photos were moved from Starclusterโ„ข Lavender", we don't have that 'Pinata Lavender' in the database yet. She had started that thread on the 9th and we never heard back from you as to a possible correct name so on the 16th I moved the photos to the generic entry.

Sorry if my sidebar is uninteresting and I may be picking the gnat poo out of the pepper but in an educational/test garden, simply labeling perennials that can't survive the location as annuals instead of something like "not hardy" or "tender" is not helpful. Taking a perennial to where it can't survive does not make it an annual. In a retail setting, labeling the non-hardy perennials as annuals is the norm for many obvious reasons, but a disservice in any other setting, if the goal of the sign is to educate. The tender perennials can be saved, if conditions exist for doing so, like in a greenhouse. A true annual can't survive indefinitely anywhere in any conditions.

However, if the only goal of the distinction in that location is to differentiate hardy perennials from other plants, the fact that it says "annual" does not have any bearing on the veracity of the sign overall, as I first thought it might.

Our database has pentas listed as perennial. That sign had the correct cultivar name.

Excellent! And I'm not even trying to follow the ID part of the discussion for this gorgeous plant but that's cool too.

Thanks, Sue! Green Grin!

Tiffany, since this label was photographed in a trial garden, I believe that being marked "Annual" is meant to indicate that the plant is part of the Annual Trials rather than the Perennial Trials. Annual Trials include both true annuals as well as tender perennials that are used "as annuals" where not hardy.

I do agree that the use of the term "Annual Trials" is a poor choice that can be confusing for people.
