It bloomed for the first time last year, only 1 flower; the color was like a shimmering red, if that makes sense. This year it has a few more buds on it.

Beautiful Hurray! Who could be the happy parents? What peonies do you have around?

Rj, that is amazing, such complex parentage. It would be interesting to see if the seedling may have offspring. Smiling

There is also a pink variety of the purple red one, it has a ways to go before it opens.

Pretty! ITOHs are generally sterile, have no fertility in pollen or seed, from what I have read and been told.
It is a beautiful bloom no matter who or how it happened. A very pretty double! Any scent at all?

I thought it might have a mix of ITOH in it because of the color, the ITOH I have has the purple/red color and the only other red peony in the neighborhood is a red fern peony about a half a block away, which is possible with the bees. Just could not figure out where the metallic sheen came from in the bud; thats what really caught my eye this year...when the sun hit it, the bud was almost reflective. I have bowl of beauty, sea shell and a white peony with a touch of dark red in the center in my yard.
I just went out to check the fragrance, its a very sweet fragrance.
Location is in more shade than sun. So far it is hanging tough with our wind today that is 15-28kts, it will be interesting to see if it hangs in there with the stiff stems.
Flowers are approx 5" across, I have 2 flowers per stalk, this is the second year it has bloomed, thinking about dividing it next year after the 3rd year of blooming.

Amazing! Is the fern peony double or single? Where did you find the seedling; that is, who is the mother?

This is so interesting. The peony itself with its metallic sheen, deep purple-red color and fully double bloom is so mysterious. The story about the parents is even more mysterious. Shrouded in mystery! Love it.

At a hybridizing workshop I took, they talked about all the genetics in any one cultivar. Like human children, certain traits are expressed but not the same everytime. A pink peony may have deep purple, white, coral or any number of colors in its genes to pass on to a next generation. Sometimes genetics are passed on in it the way you'd like to see them, and sometimes they are omitted. The complexity in breeding and what traits are pushed forward and show up on the cultivar.... there is not really a simple answer.

When you do your own planned crosses, and bloom them out, you can keep track of traits that move forward fordifferent cultivars. For example, Lemon Chiffon and Salmon Dream are a couple that hybrizers say "make great kids" . Traits passed on in these cases are exceptional.
But also remember, you never know what the next Salmon Dream or Lemon Chiffon is if you don't branch out on using other cultivars.

What you have is beautiful how ever it happened.
