Hi all,
I bought this potted Itoh peony yesterday and the soil is very low in the pot. How deep should I plant it? Should I plant deep enough to just cover the red pips that are showing, or should I put a bit more soil over them?
Thanks!
I have been enjoying all of your beautiful peony photos and hope to have some to share when mine start to bloom. It is a ways off, though, although this potted Itoh is going to bloom early since it was in a greenhouse before I bought it.

I think those pips should be covered with 1/2 in of soil AFTER it settled ( next spring or so ). My soil always settles an inch or more ( may be two ), so I would be trying to keep it on the top of the soil to avoid planting it too deep. And add soil later - in the fall + mulch and more in spring if necessary after you remove mulch. Chicken wire helps against squirrels Smiling

Valerie, if you haven't already planted it, I would keep it in the pot until after it blooms. If you shock the plant, the blooms may not open properly.

Which variety did you get?

Oops, I already planted it. My husband always teases me because I never wait to do anything Hilarious!

I bought Berry Garcia. I posted my story on the Itoh thread about trying to decide between Pastel Spender and Visions of Sugar Plums at the nursery, and when I went away for a few minutes to decide and check on the internet, someone else bought both of them before I got back a few minutes later!

The first bud on the plant bloomed yesterday, so hopefully everything will be OK Crossing Fingers!

I am happy with it, and it is pretty! It has lots of buds still to come, too.
