A bit stumped about the identification of this plant that is populating one of my natural areas. Any help is much appreciated!

You won't like the answer. They are baby Ailanthus altissima, commonly known as tree of heaven.

I agree; Tree of Heaven. Rip them out.
One good thing...our database could use your most excellent photos.

There must be at least one big one near you. The seeds don't fly that far.

I saw somewhere on the internet that the longest distance the seeds travel via the wind was 299 feet. Don't know who measured that... Shrug! , but yes, there should be an adult tree somewhere nearby.

I've looked all around and don't see a big one in my yard or the neighboring yards.
Obviously not looking forward to the battle to eradicate it.
Also have out of control vinca vine I'm trying to get rid of in the back yard. Needless to say, I'll be keeping roundup in business this season.
