My mom has these plants coming up in her potted plants. It is bugging her to identify. We live in Tyler Texas.

Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)?

Looks a lot like the leaves of Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) to me too.

I didn't think bloodroot had hairy leaves and stems.

@Seanprice, can you give us any more information, do you think they came in the original pots of petunias, or do you think they are from the potting mix? Can you show us a whole plant so that we can see the growth habit? Are there any more growing in other places on your property? Do you think they are growing from seeds in the pots after you got the petunias, or were they already growing with the petunias when she got them?

I keep thinking it looks familiar but so far am not coming up with anything. If nothing else maybe bumping this up will bring it to someone's attention who recognizes it.

Is it a vine? Could it be a Bitter Melon?

I wondered about bitter melon too but I think the leaf margins are more smooth on the ID plant. I also wondered about size, in the ID plant the leaves are not all that big in relation to the petunia flowers. If the flowers are calibrachoa rather than petunia that would make the leaves even smaller. It would indeed be helpful to have a better idea of its growth habit.

I still think it's a Cleome. I've seen seedlings with these leaves.

A different cleome from the "regular" summer bedding kind? The seedlings from the latter have leaflets that are not conjoined at the base like the ID plant, here's a pic:

I'm not familiar with cleome seedlings other than these.

At first it reminded me a lot of Bitter Melon/ Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia) but comparing photo's more closely I don't think the plant in question has the growth habit of a vine. We have Momordica charantia growing all over the place around here and with those tendrils, it vines and climbs over everything in sight!

Most of the close ones I've seen have been vines too. It's close to this one except that the lobes are more rounded in the ID plant:

They might be a litte less pointy on younger leaves, or maybe it's something related.

Edited to add - they look a bit more rounded in this picture:

Did it open up any more than that? The flower of the Ipomoea pes-tigris is pretty fuzzy at the base.

Edited to add another question that was asked above, is it now growing like a vine?
