I got a plant as a gift from my son from school. I want it to thrive but I don't know what it is to gather information on it. If you could help I'd greatly appreciate it.

@islander: I think the leaves are different and Frillylily's answer seems closest.
@Frillylily: Thank you, I was worried about over-watering it and for good measure since it tends to rot.
