This is in Chesapeake, VA. My friend is trying to ID this plant. It does not belong to her & she does not know the people who have it. It's in my friend's neighborhood and she says it's been sitting there on these people's patio in the same pot for the 3 years she has lived there. We both agree it's probably not getting enough sun &/or has poor drainage (or overwatering) by the looks of it.
If you need any further info. please don't hesitate to ask & I will ask my friend if she knows the answer.
Thanks!

It looks like an Agave. Hard to tell which one considering condition.

Does it winter outside and if so how cold does it get on average.

I've asked her if it appears they leave it outside all winter long. Haven't heard back from her yet on that but will post when I hear from her. Looks like that is zone 7b to 8a which would make the lowest temps. between 5 & 15 F.

Beschorneria perhaps? Does not look like agave to me but I guess it could be one.

@Baja_Costero
I wondered if it might be yucca but the width of the leaves looked too wide to me. However, I am by no means very versed in the differences between the two. Why does it not fit the agave characteristics? I'm curious to know the differences between the two.

Ok, heard back from my friend & she says it sits out there on that patio all winter long. She's going to try to get a better photo as well. Stay tuned......

@flaflwrgrl I think @mcvansoest may be a better person to ask, but there are not many wide-leaved agaves without marginal spines, and the ones I know of are sensitive to cold in that range.

Apart from that it doesn't look like an agave, in a general sort of way (lack of marginal spines, floppy leaves) not to say there aren't agaves without marginal spines or agaves with floppy leaves, but those are the exceptions (in a general sort of way).

The reason I asked about the wintering outside and the average lows, is that any Agaves that I can think of that might look like that are all pretty to extremely cold sensitive. A. weberi, could fit the bill as it is almost without marginal teeth, and can be floppy, but I doubt it would survive those kind of winter lows, a night or two like that, but not a winter long.

Once we have determined it is not an Agave, I am unfortunately of little help when it comes to ID'ing it.

Thank you islander, Thijs, Baja & tarev. So everyone agrees it's not an agave, thus it's a yucca. I have another photo. I don't know if this will be enough to get closer to a firm ID as to which yucca but it never hurts to try.

I don't know if it's a yucca, actually. I was thinking another plant from that family. But that's way outside my range of experience.

I still think it's an Agave. I guess having overwintered Agaves in a non-Agave climate, you get used to the lack of normal characteristics.
