George Turner purchased the site in 1903, including a shallow lake 10' below sealevel.
In 1920 Turner opened it as a nursery and was selling fruits, vegetables and plants.

Scot, thank you for the wonderful photo tour of Sunken Gardens, you got some great pictures! It's been a long time since I've been there and I'd forgotten how lush and pretty that place is. I especially love all the color with those gorgeous Croton's (Codiaeum) and what a great close up shot of that beautiful Flamingo! Thumbs up

I have visited the gardens a few times, the Croton Society held a tour there to show off the many great Crotons a few years ago.

Oh how I'd love to have a yard full of Crotons; we have a few growing in the yard and they are one of my favorite plants because of those colorful leaves! Sunken Gardens appears to have some really large specimens!

Wow, that's a really wonderful Asplenium? fern in that 3rd photo too! I also see bark of the pretty Rainbow Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus deglupta) in one of the photos; we saw some beautiful specimens at McKee Botanical Gardens here in Vero Beach.
