I think orientals are more difficult from seed than martagons or any of the Caucasian lilies (also hypogeal germinating). Extra kudos to you, Tracey! Your green thumb is well deserved! Thumbs up Thumbs up

One more, I might like this one best. Please ignore any weeds in the picture.
Thank you for your encouragement!

You know Tracey, I think your lilies like the weeds since they grow so well for you. "Companion plants" Rolling on the floor laughing

That's a good line, Connie. No matter how much I weed, it is never enough. "companion plants" it is! Hilarious!

It would seem that the weeds do a good job of keeping the roots cool, just as lilies like it. Mine bake all day in the dry cracked clayish soil.

Here's a hybridizing flaw I've never heard of: the pistil is too long for the bud! At first I thought it was just a fluke, but this is the third year it has happened. The kink is always exactly the same, and every flower on this particular seedling of White Henryi x Sarabande does it. You can open any bud and see the kink inside!

I transplanted this seedling batch quite late last fall. A few siblings didn't like it and came up short and blind this season. These are a couple others:

Nice strong stems and more floral substance inherited from Sarabande, but not much color!

One last one for me to post on this thread this year. A later flowering oriental seedling. First year flowering, two blossoms. It's been nice to have some success flowering these from seed finally.

An update on the seedlings from Pard's seed back in 2006. Long lived, although some years better than others:

Orange sensation x matrix. Made the cross last last year to try out the whole hybridizing thing. Nothing special in the grand scheme of liliums, but it's the first cross I made. Have had 3 blooms from this one so far, and each one has been very different.

Just to confirm, simply because I am a little confused.....Orange sensation x matrix flowered within a year? I thought this was uncommon, most people appear to say 2 to 3 years from seed (bar special cases like l.phillipinese)? Is it because matrix is a dwarf perhaps?

I think Dave has been giving them special treatment. His have grown very quickly. By contrast, the seeds I started last year stayed quite small - likely due to a combination of poor media and less than ideal lighting! I am still learning...

Yes. Seed was sown in December. I'm not sure if I would say it's blooming is due to it being a dwarf as I have seed from Lazy Lady x Leichtlini with buds too about to bloom.

I hace a couple other crosses with the possibility of blooming this year as well

I used 8 bulb T5 fixtures, and included mychorhizae, along with small doses of fertilizer. Watered maybe once a week as well.

Sure looks a whole lot like the pod parent, doesn't it? Proving that most often, spotting will dominate.

Way to go Dave!

It does. But it is more out facing, and not as recurved as the pod parent. And the yellow seems to be a touch more vibrant. But then again it is a fresh bloom. Interesting how none of the tones from Lazy Lady shows up.
