I have this hens and chicks plant in a sun room where it gets plenty of sunlight. I water it basically just when it looks dry. It came in a small pot and when it was growing, I planted it in a strawberry plant pot. It wasn't growing in that, so I reported into a medium sized regular pot. I did not use succulent planting soil. But if you can see in the images, the bottoms are dried and dead. Do I need to prune these? What causes it? I'm new to this so I'm not an expert with plants. Thanks!

Hi there @Lychee565 Welcome! to NGA. You have come to the right place. Hurray!
There are many that will chime in on this.

From what I see they are asking to go outdoors to live. They have become etiolated, not enough sun. Sempervivum are not happy indoors.
Now, if you could provide us with information on your outdoor growing conditions that would be very helpful in deciding how and where outdoors your semps would like to be. They will recover if given the conditions they prefer. Waiting to hear from you. Hurray!

My thought was low light and etiolation as well but the poster said there was plenty of sun in the room. I still think it's etiolation. Maybe it's not direct sunlight? In any case, these guys really prefer to be outdoors.

When I was at clinic I talked with Robin about my succulents elongation in my sunroom. His reply was that the new windows filter out what plants need to grow properly. These are tender succulents but thought I would add that info.
Sempervivum really do best outside as they are alpine plants not desert plants.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try and move them outdoors. There are a lot of animals and bugs around, so plants tend to get eaten up, but I think I could give this a try.

I have more then my share of critters but semps do not seem to be a favorite meal.
I do find that they are more likely to get eaten more in winter mostly I think deer when they are hungry sometimes a squirrel sometime will dig them up while foraging for food.
Depending on where you live and what wildlife you have around you could put a small cage, chicken wire or similar around the pot if you think its necessary.
Plants are like that little ray of sunshine on a rainy day.

Thank you. I live in Pennsylvania so we have deer, squirrels, foxes, and others. I don't think they will eat them as much as I'm worried about bugs. But I'm going to put it out and see what happens! Thanks again.

I have similar wildlife and do not have much problem this time of the year but I have woods and fields in the back and on one side so they do have plenty to eat.

When you put them outside you most likely would not have to water them as they rain usually takes care of that for you unless its a real long hot spell.
With all the rain we have been having I think I should start growing mushrooms. Sad

Not sure if this was said but put them in sun gradually or they will sun burn.
