Hi, our Clematis Montana Marjorie flowered beautifully last year...its first bloom, but this year, nothing, just dead wood along the fence. Happily, there is new growth appearing from the base of the plant....but why has it not grown from the old wood?

Hi @looneytunes2
Check for damage to the main stem. It might be hard to see, but something may have cut or gnawed through it.
Another possibility is that the upper part of the plant may have been killed by herbicide spray drift. Was anyone spraying weeds in the vicinity?
I doubt that Clematis Montana would suffer from winter-kill in the UK, but are you sure of the ID? Could you have another species instead?
