I wasn't really sure where to post this so I figured I'd start a new thread. I have serious foliage problems on my Iris. They just had little the other day but after 2 days of cool rainy weather it has gotten out of control. I was out looking around and noticed one I have been waiting to see bloom is sending up a flower stalk but the tip of it looks ragged and covered in the spots. Is there anything I should do or is too late at this point?

Eeeep! Blinking

Was that damage caused by leaf spot or were slugs involved too?
You don't know if it will grow until you try!

I don't think it was slugs but I could be wrong.

I did a quick google on iris leaf spot and the images and the description seem to match your situation. It also seems to get worse in wet humid conditions which also matches.

All the websites I looked at recommend cutting off all damaged foliage and buds and some also suggested treatment with a fungicide as well. This is the American Iris Society information:
http://www.irises.org/About_Ir...

I don't know for sure if it is a fungus causing your spots. This is just what I've found on google and it may be worth a try.

Yes I think it is the Iris Fungus as well. I will try to find a fungicide recommended for Iris. They are so bad that I think if I cut all the infected foliage they'd have none! Maybe I will just cut off the completely brown areas and treat with fungicide.. and hope for the best!

I would only cut off the affected part of the foliage, not the whole leaf. Sorry I didn't describe that very well. I don't know what will happen if you cut off the whole leaf but I wouldn't risk it unless someone tells you it is OK to do so.

I started cutting and weeding. There is a pain in the neck weed growing all around them and I know that's not helping! So I started weeding but the ground is still pretty wet from all the rain we had so it is not as easy as usual. I think I am going to postpone the weeding except for right next to the rhizomes for a day or two and just cut the bad foliage. The ones that are more established have more healthy foliage while the newer ones are almost totally covered in spots.

Now the weather is so hot! It is 90 right now. Probably nothing for people in Cali but when it goes from 50's and raining to this in just a few days my body goes into shock! I had to give up weeding at 11:00 am but it was much easier to shake the soil off the roots today.

This has been the coolest spring in Northern California since I've moved here around 17 years ago. It's 67 now with possible rain today and a week from Monday its suppose to be 104. Blinking

Wow 104! We very rarely get to 100 and when it does I am thankful it doesn't happen often. I am not sure about there but here it gets very humid.

It's very dry here. The only time we get the humidity here is 'if' we get a summer rain (which might be once in the summertime).
The hottest I've seen here is 119. That's way to hot!

Oh my that is crazy! I don't think I could handle it! My husband is always telling me we could move to northern Cali but I don't think he knows it can get that hot! He works outside and that would make his life miserable.

I guess it depends where in Northern California you want to move to.

@meredith79, northern california has a range of weather areas. you'll have to research. the closer it is to the ocean, generally, the cooler it is. as you head east inland it gets warmer.

for example if you were to look up santa cruz, ca. you'll find the weather quite different than los gatos, ca. which is just up over the hill about about 23 mi. away. 'l.g.' weather today had a high of 71 & a low of 51 today. on the other hand santa cruz, which is closer to the pacific ocean had a high of 69 under partly cloudy skies & a low of 52. it's also, generally more temperate the closer you are to the ocean.

san francisco to los gatos is only 52 mi. but the temp. in s.f. had a high of 63 and a low of 52. so temperatures swing all over the place in northern calif. it's not all hot. it's a very rare day when temps in s.f. reach 90. not that it never happens Hilarious! but rare.

we loved the bay area, and if we won the lottery Rolling on the floor laughing we would move back in a heart beat nodding .

Yes I would definitely have to research. It is hard to find good info about it. Maybe just visiting would be best!

if it's weather you are most concerned about you might look up average temperature for the year... i've seen posts of weekly temps for the 12 months, also if you look up demographics for a city or county, there's much information that you can glean. Hilarious!

See I don't trust averages. Where we live the average doesn't give the idea of what it's like when it hits -13 with a wind chill that make sit feel like -20. Not fun Sad Weather channel shows our average as High 33 and avg. low 12 in January. I can tell you it is usually much colder with a weird fluky day or two warm so that is what bumps that average up.

Also when it is windy which is a lot in winter it feels so much worse than what the temp. suggests.
