This plant, about 2 feet tall, is a volunteer in my daughter's backyard in Northern Virginia (Zone 7a) and has just started to bloom.
Does anyone recognize it? I suspect it might be in the Ranunculus (Buttercup) family, but that's just a guess.

Potentilla of some sort. When the bloom is more open, take another pic and we can give a more accurate id.

As promised, here are photos of fully open flowers. The flowers are about 1/2 inch wide. Does it look like Potentilla norvegica (Rough Cinquefoil)?
