My wife keeps telling me this is poison ivy in our backyard. Is she right?

The top one is poison ivy, the second one is not, it looks like a seedling Manitoba maple, Acer negundo.

PI has alternate leaves, Acer negundo has pairs of opposite leaves. Whenever you are unsure from leaf observation, that should help sort those 2 plants.

Isnt poisin ivy usually red where the branch of the leaves meet?

I haven't noticed that but I wouldn't use it as an identifying characteristic in any case, the same could be said of Acer negundo at times. As Tiffany said, poison ivy has alternate leaves, Acer negundo (boxelder aka Manitoba maple) has opposite leaves. What makes the difference most clear in your pictures is that several of the leaves in your second picture have five leaflets per leaf instead of three. You may not see that on all leaves but if you see those two extra leaflets below the end three you know it is not poison ivy. Remember the saying, leaflets three let it be or words to that effect.
