I have a thing for daylilies with bubbly or chicken fat edges. Unfortunately daylilies with a high fat content are usually not good openers; the "fat" hangs up and trying to open it yourself usually just ends up with torn edges. However, that doesn't make me like it any less and I keep one daylily around purely for the edges. I'm wondering if anyone has any examples of it in their garden? There might even be a few that open properly..........Maryl

Heavy Weight Champ by Buntyn can hang up on the early blooms especially, but often it will produce a decent bloom with a good edge:

I love the plants with chicken fat as well. Lady Alvatine and Gloucester both have beautiful thick edges that never seem to hang up on me. I received a nice double fan of Lady Alvatine from Wynn's last spring, loved it and ordered two more doubles. I won Gloucester on the Lily Auction this spring. It has bloomed and looks a like Lady Alvatine. I later found that they share a parent.

Boy, those are beauties Pat. I like yellows, so that makes them even more appealing. Thanks for posting them..........Maryl

Pat, you and I have the same taste. I also have Lady A and Gloucester and just love them. I nearly keeled over the first time Lady A bloomed, it was so beautiful.

I initially didn't care for yellows....Stella's come to mind. Once I got a look at Lady Alvatine,, I was hooked. It is big and fancy with a ruffled edge....just the way I like em. I have three daylily beds and LA is in all three. I have a spare in a pot as well. Gloucester is equally beautiful. Those two will always have a place in my garden.

The more chicken fat, the better!
