So, I have a graduate degree but I'm pretty stupid (just ask any member of my family). For two years I've lived in Pennsylvania and thought I was in 6a or 6b. Yesterday I happened to look at a map and realized I'm in zone 5b. I thought, "That can't be right!" so I looked at another...and another...and another.

Yep, I'm in 5b. I don't know where I had gotten 6 from. If I remembered where it would at least make more sense. I think probably I was just wishfully thinking? *Blush*

I'm 7 a or b, but certainly have a solid 8 or 9 on the sunny side.
Whatever you have, you've got to push it anyway. Garden dangerously.

Now you've done made me look, too. I KNOW I was in 9a according to one map 4 years ago. NGA Map says 8b. I don't have my Graduate Degree so I guess that makes me just plain ol' stupid! Going to change my profile now.

Alright! I am not so stupid after all. NGA's map is from 1990. ON the 2012 map it shows me in zone 9a.

I got moved from 4b to 5a. And right after that happened, we had the "polar vortex" winter of 2013-2014, which killed off plants that should have been hardy in zone 3! Rolling on the floor laughing

Hilarious! I suggest you petition Sunset Western Gardens to get into the central part of the country. They have extended the western garden zones to the east coast already. They give all of the various areas attention...not just min. and max. temperatures, but the micro climates between the mountains, valleys, canyons, coast, etc. West has 24 zones+ A1-2 for Alaska and Hawaii. It is so much better than just knowing what your average winter low is. Guarantee you USDA zone 10 in Ca. and zone 10 in Fl. are very different gardening zones

With global (and local) warming, zones are generally moving northward. Going to a lower number zone seems odd, but global warming is not uniform as weather patterns change.

I just treat those zones as near suggestions, ball park range. Year to year it varies now. Just got to try and see what works well or not.

Then there's the other end of the equation- what zone the nursery labels the plant for. Do they really test it in every zone they state? Doubt it.
