This article, dated 2008, has a lot of good information, but the lighting options in 2017 are years ahead of what was available then. A well written update, including the various lighting options, costs, and performance, would be a great asset.

Mac-
Can you post the latest info you have? Are there better options now? Do you have some experience with indoor growing? Can you share what works for you?

@Toni, There are numerous threads in the Ask a Question forum related to lighting options. There are multiple options and prices depending on your need. LED's, which weren't mentioned in the article are becoming quite popular, and prices for them are falling.

Just to preface, we don't grow plants indoors except for starts for our vegetable garden. We have had great success with that. We start everything under fluorescent shop lights: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Utili... , $18.48 at Lowe’s and use F32T8 32 watt 6500K lamps: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Phi... , box of 10 for $33.97.

@McCannon

Thank you for your reply.
I also use shop lights to successfully grow vegetable starts.
I will check to see if the bulbs are the same as yours.
