I believe it to be some variety of wildflower!

Thank you!

The leaves are preventing a positive id.
Looks like a rudbeckia... But.... Which one?

Can you post pictures of entire plant?

Possibly California coneflower...

The leaves don't look right for Rudbeckia californica, the ID plant's are heart-shaped and appear to clasp the stem - it looks rather unusual. The flower does look like a coneflower of some kind.

It looks rather like Dracopis amplexicaulis "clasping coneflower", syn. Rudbeckia amplexicaulis:

A pic of the leaves:

In some pictures the leaves seem more toothed than the ID plant though but the habit seems right.

The leaves are wrong for Rudbeckia californica. And it does not occur anywhere in Southern California.

I think we have the wrong coneflower. Maybe Rudbeckia amplexicaulis

https://www.google.com/search?...:

R. amplexicaulis is native to the southern U.S. but you can buy seeds for it.

Edited to add: Sooby and I are on the same trail.

My first choice actually was rudbeckia maxima.

Is why we need more pictures of this plant.

Sorry about that!

Here's the best biggest shot I've got now. I'll take some more if you need. I'm in Southern California & likely planted it with other bulbs and wildflowers.

Yes more photos please. I would love to know what you have there. A photo of the entire plant, the base of it. Just to see if the leaves are the same shape at the base. Maybe a more mature flower too. It's very interesting and someone, I'm sure will figure it out. I tip my hat to you.

I'm still going with Dracopis amplexicaulis (syn. Rudbeckia amplexicaulis), clasping coneflower. Here's the leaf and flower stem structure again:
