I live in zone 8, in WA, and I decided to use raised beds as my soil was very clay-heavy and full of rocks.

Our part of Little Rock is so rocky that I dig my flower beds with a hand pick ax rather than a fork or shovel. I've also built raised beds with concrete landscape blocks.

Over the years several of my neighbors have added a variety of raised beds in their front gardens. Now there is even talk of forming a "garden gang".

A garden gang is a group of people that volunteer to build raised beds for the purpose of "Grow food not lawns" Here is how it works:

We would get together once a week and build raised beds at someones house. The following week we do another house, until all in the group have raised beds. Each person is responsible for their own materials, but maybe we can help each other as needed.
