Can anyone ID this plant? My mother got it from a friend but doesn't know what it is. Thank you in advance.

Is it a tree?

I kept scanning this because it looked so familiar. I took my photo at a nursery, that's why it I couldn't quite come up with a name!

does this grow back ea spring from the ground? The old wood does not leaf out again, it is not 'wood' it is more like a plant, and dies back at frost?
does it spread by runner?

I looked at it in the database but it doesn't say much about its habits. I would be interested in getting some of this maybe if I knew more about it.

Japanese Knotweed is very invasive. On doing some online research I read some conflicting reviews whether the variegated variety was as invasive, less invasive, or not at all. Because of this ambiguity I chose to grow mine in a container. I also am in a zone where this plant might not be hardy but even so, I decided to be safe rather than sorry. Whistling It is a very attractive plant; the new growth in spring has lovely pink highlights.
