Hello janellecpu, I saw this article about gardening and watering during heat wave in Arizona. Shade cloths you can get at big box stores. Click on the link to read the article.

Hi Janelle, if you can put up some stakes and put shadecloth over your plants it will help. Otherwise, just water very well early in the morning so they'll have plenty of moisture to survive the day.

Hi Janelle,

Your high desert is hotter than my high desert so you may have to make your own judgement calls.

My cucumbers have shade cloth that protects them during the hottest part of the day. My tomatoes and squash are on their own. I would cover your peppers, although I have not covered mine. Peppers like heat but they do sunburn.

Water early and deep. Don't worry if the squash and cucumbers wilt as this is their way of dealing with extreme heat. They will perk up after sunset.

What are the little trees you have planted and how long have they been there?

I'm using shade cloth, umbrellas, etc. Anything to keep them from baking. I water deep in the morning and deep in the evening as well. Water, water, water.

It even helps to position your patio chairs over plants that will fit.
