I'm curious if social gardening is a 'thing'? Like.. what are the odds that there are gatherings or groups of people local to me who all garden and get together to talk about their gardening and discuss issues and pests and seeds and successes, etc? Like... this.. only.. local? Maybe something where people can help teach others about various things? trade knowledge etc?

I've been looking around and can't see anything, but maybe I'm using the wrong search words?

Thanks!

Try meetup.com to see if there are groups in your area.

Robyn,
There are lots of local garden clubs in mn, also most counties have Master Gardener programs.

Can you tell me about the master Gardner program? I tried looking it up a little last night but it looked like just an online forum to submit questions.. I couldn't see anything about actually getting involved and seeing real people.

Hi Robyn,
I'm in Dakota Co, the process there was to submit an application form, have an interview, than take classes at the U, they used to alternate seasons. First year it's 50 hrs vol, then 25 per year after that.
Right now there is approx 140 members in my former group
Great instruction, you meet once a month where there is typically a great speaker
You do not have to be a horticulturist, just a love of gardening and a willingness to learn.
Give them a call and talk to them to see if it meets your expectation
Other counties may be slightly different

Thanks! I kinda sunk a bit at being required to take classes at the U... Unfortunately, feeding my kids and paying my mortgage takes priority. It would be great to get into that some day though!

That would be so cool if more communities would have local gardening clubs... I would sure join. I know that there are many transplanted New Yorkers here in Southern California, they're also New York Yankee fans. Tried finding groups like that near me, thought it would be nice to meet and hang out with others that share common ground as I, but no luck.

Did you try Meet Up, Debbie? They're in California. My daughter has been in several of their groups. She found some good friends that way.

Robyn,

The classes are no cost, they also give them at different times, some of which are evening and on the weekend, to make it easier for individuals that have commitments. There are also garden clubs in many communities.

Yes, sorry I did not remember a fee for the course. It's nice they have an online option!
