My family and I relocated from the city to rural Salem, CT, ten years ago. I always wanted to have a garden so I started digging that first spring in 2008. I bought some sunflower seeds and a few other plants, then a gardener friend shared a handful of plants to help me get started. Not knowing any of the plants or what I was doing, I put them all in my little garden, including a lilac plant (to the left of the yellow Coriopsis).

The following winter, I seriously started reading up on every garden book I could find and immediately started sketching and planning my vision...My husband's initial response was, "What!!! Isn't your existing garden big enough!" The answer is always "No" of course. This picture was taken in spring 2017. The lilac was supposed to be moved after I learned how big it was going to be, but it bloomed that year, so there it stays. Today, my husband is very pleased with all the changes.
