Hi!
These are two seedlings growing in my garden. Just to learn, I wanted to measure them, count branches and buds. But I must admit that still I don't know how branches are counted, even if I check on AHS I still get confused.
Is there someone willing to help?

The first one from what I can see looks like a terminal tip with two way branching, the second one looks like a "W" three way terminal tip, with one lateral branch. It is easier for me if I can remember that each branch must have at least 2 buds to count as a branch, and each branch must originate directly from the scape, not from a branch.

Sabrina, good question. I'm not sure how to count them either.
Experts?

Donald, many thanks! So the second is a 3 branch or should I count the lateral one developing from the scape (4 branches)? It has three buds.

Larry, I guess there is nothing for it but to officially change your name to Donald. It would be so much simpler that way. Big Grin Rolling on the floor laughing

That would confuse too many family members...dad, paw paw, poo...you know they might not notice? Only when I am in trouble do they used my name "LARRY" so it might be a good thing to change it.

Sorry Larry, I just checked the phone and a donald happens when I start to write "do", don't". That's when donald happens. Shrug!

The past week I replied to an email using my phone, I had to write in english but the keyboard is italian. So my "Hi Joe" became "Highway Joe". D'Oh!

I agree with Larry on the branch counts for the two images. I also like the easy way Larry wrote to remember how to count...
"each branch must have at least 2 buds to count as a branch, and each branch must originate directly from the scape, not from a branch."

Here is a link to the AHS Dictionary page that explains how to count branching....

I found this scape this morning on Persian Market.

The terminal tip is normally one, two, or three branches..I tried to show all six branches but I never could get the angle right to show them all because they were so closely packed at the tip on the right half of the fused scape.
I thought it would be a good learning experience to try naming the branches. What would be the terminal tip count and lateral branch count (I know you can't see one branch so just assume the 5 that are visible).
The question I have is should a fused scape be counted as one or two scapes? I pulled 5 dead scapes(counted this as one) off this plant this morning, but I did not include this one when I did the bud count and branching averages. Should I have included it?
