Irises forum: Dividing bearded iris in northern Virginia

Would now be a bad time, with temperatures in the 90s? I think they bloomed here in early to mid-late May, so it's been about 6 weeks. If this is too early, what is a good time and when would it be too late?

If you're brave enough to work in the heat, the iris will be fine to dig now. Or later when it cools off some. Smiling

Anytime between now and early September should be good for your area. I have planted in the end of September here in NC with good results but you get frost before we do.

In early September here, just as night temps start cooling down, the iris break their heat dormancy. I like to dig/plant mine in late June through July so that they can get some growth in before they go into winter dormancy. I can dig in August, but like Tom indicated in his post above, it is too hot and humid for me to be digging then. Smiling
