I happened upon this plant today while cleaning out rogue sunflowers that had planted themselves due to the birds dropping the seeds. The bottom stalk is red and appears to be sort of translucent. Spiky leaves, no buds. I live right outside Raleigh, NC.

Looks a little like a balsam plant
