I cut open a perfectly ripe avocado yesterday and when I took out the pit I noticed it was smaller than usual and had a stem growing out of it still. Can I still try to grow a plant from this seed and if so what side do I try to root it from?

Welcome!

I'm not sure that root looks viable but it won't hurt to try. Put the root (flatter) end in water.

Next time you decide to grow on avocado from seed, lay it on its side about half buried in a pot of potting soil.

Bottom side down.
That black, on bottom, does not look good. Put it in pot with soil, leaving, a little tip out. You can allways try another.
